I have 6th grade and they want attention from peers AND YOU!!! They feel the tension they cause you and enjoy the power, BUT most want your love and attention. Give them some FUN and choose one to just have a conversation with about their pet, clothes, hairstyle, tv show, etc. and share your experiences with them. (one or two students only at a time). They actually want to get to know you and know that you care about them. It’s a one way street for you and a few won’t meet you BUT you will know that when you see them years later there will be joy in their lives for being with you (THEIR FAVORITE TEACHER). GO FOR IT❤️!
I actually enjoy my 7-8 graders a bunch. They aren't quite as cynical as the high school. They resist at first because being cool (or whatever todays word is) is the most important. But if you can make it okay to be a bit dorky, they love still being kids and being creative and goofy.
You also teach a subject that most kids like. Try teaching math to 40 kids, where only 8 try to learn. The rest try to actively disrupt the class. Then no admin support, and calling home does nothing.
Every once in a while, but posts like this make me appreciative of how good I've got it. These munchkins aren't exactly easy, but their smiling faces and squeaky little laughs more than make up for the naptime tantrums. I have no idea how all y'all middle school teachers do it. Dealing with hormonal teenagers day in and day out has to be so emotionally draining!
I used to enjoy that age--did it for 26 years. I got out and I am loving the high school. Make the move if you have the credential.
Last year’s crop of 6th graders were a real challenge - not sure why, but ugh!! This year is significantly better. They’re still middle schoolers who feel the need to push boundaries, but they’re reasonable and not as apathetic as last year’s group. This is my 26th year, and there are just some years where you get a very tough group.
So glad this year is a better one. That being said, I’m ever so glad I don’t teach lower grades - I can’t handle the neediness and inability to be patient. Hats off to you primary teachers!!
