Sometimes neither. The boss might just like them better. I was in a group where the actual managers had no clue what was happening and wouldn’t listen to feedback from the asst managers under them. Nothing was based on the actual work because the people writing the evaluations had zero clue. This was at a large, well known company. Supposedly so great to their workers.

Honestly, I think it depends a lot on the culture. In some places people absolutely still eat up the long-hours, always-online image, even if the actual output isn’t better. I’d like to think performance should be about the quality of the work, but I’m not sure that’s always how it gets judged.

Ya, I feel like optics still play a huge role.
The job performance is tied to how well a company still budgets for keeping the headcount. 😂

At my company, it’s more focused on the quality of work you’re doing. Thankfully we don’t have to log hours yet but I still think they would focus on quality over hours put in
