Do you think soft skills are becoming more important in our industry? I used to think success in finance was all about technical skills—modeling, forecasting, hitting your numbers. But lately, I’ve seen people get ahead because they know how to lead a team, navigate tough conversations, or build client trust. I’ve even started focusing more on communication and emotional intelligence than certifications. Are we finally starting to value soft skills as much as hard ones—or is it still seen as “nice to have” instead of essential?

I think soft skills have always mattered, but now they’re finally being recognized as critical to long-term success. You can teach someone how to run a model, but building trust and managing people takes a different kind of strength. It’s a shift I’m happy to see.
You need the technical skills to get started and know how to even use those soft skills effectively. Bringing in those other strengths will be the thing that actually gets you far in my opinion. Giving the soft skills names and numbers in your resume can absolutely help you stick out too.
