I think the actual work doesn’t convict me (wasn’t here or on the opioid study)
I think it’s how pretentious and self-centered our profession can be, especially MBB. It’s hard to keep that stench off of you. Humility is required to be a disciple of Christ.
I think there’s a way to honor Christ in all work/professions, especially ones like ours where you never know the kind of impact you could have on someone by just being kind and showing some grace to colleagues. If someone’s been getting drilled by a rude boss and you offer some words of encouragement and a smile, that’s serving
I see it as a means to an end and I enjoy the intellectual challenge (sometimes) and corporate soft skills I’m developing. I’d be bored and would not be attaining my highest form of self in an “easier” job like teaching for example. I don’t think careers are meant to be the most fulfilling part of your life. You’re providing a service to corporations willing to pay for it, and whether or not the projects or corporations are “good” or “impactful” is up for debate, but that could be said of pretty much any “high paying” career.
With all due respect, I do think teaching is a much more difficult profession than consulting. Having been involved in both.
I like to think that maybe God put me here, right where I am, to bring His presence.
I have Col 3:23 sticker on my laptop. Working heartily is important and shouldn't be an issue. We have value and when we save companies $$$ getting $$$ back for our firm shouldn't be a sin.
You mean consulting vs being in industry? Or vs being directly in ministry?
People will see Christ in you by your character. I’ve had the opportunity to talk about Christ easily when I was in the corporate world bc people tend to ask each other what we’re doing over the weekend or who we spend time with or what our summer plans are, and it’s a great way to talk about how I’m involved in my local church and how my closest friends are those in my church who share the same faith as me. Even when I don’t initially bring it up, people notice my kindness and humility in what I do and they attribute it to me being a Christian, and it makes it easier to talk about why I believe in God and so I’ve found it to be such a great way to spread the gospel even a little.
The money is good, yes, and I’ve found that I’m not selfish with my money, and it makes it easier for me to be generous with my local church where not everyone else has been afforded that luxury, which means i can help with paying certain expenses here more easily like helping us get curriculum for our Sunday school or getting instruments or even sponsoring lunch for the kids once in a while.
