I would state that it depends on the job description you are applying to.
I would customize your resume to highlight the relevant experience you have.
Take the job description and your resume and feed them to ChatGPT, and ask it to create a modified resume that has an introductory section highlighting the skills and experience you have, that match requirements for the new job.
And ask ChatGPT to then place below that summary a version of your resume that would show companies (not dates) with the relevant skills
I’m in a similar situation. I’ve heard on here that you should only go back around 10 years or so if you’re concerned about ageism.
Perhaps list your current role and then fill up the rest of the resume with the skills/certifications, software/tool proficiency, and education sections.
I’m similarly at the point where I’m ready to remove everything before 2012.
Ageism is a thing. You can choose to hide it yourself by doing things like omitting older career history, hiding graduation dates, or dying your hair. However, even if you get to the interview stage, if they sense you are an old soul, they can filter you out for “culture fit”. It is a buyer’s market. You can choose to be true to yourself and not hide your age and experience or try to pretend that you are younger than you really are. You will be found out.
I kinda hate that because I gained a lot of experience that hasn't been duplicated in my current job.
Another thing I could do is break up my previous job. From 1996 to 2001 I worked for one non-profit. Then we were taken over by another non-profit until 2007. Then the first non-profit took us back. So, I could put the time with the previous job as starting on 2007.
Suggestions?
