Look for an internship. Pick out companies you are interested in working for and reach out. I worked for a huge tech company, and it was clear to me that internships were gifted to those who had connections at the company already. i.e. mom or dad or sibling worked there, and the referral gave them an edge. Personally, I think that's gross. I am a firm believer of everyone being on a level playing field and starting from there. Unfortunately, that's not how it works. Network through LinkedIn. Ask for a "coffee chat" and the sort. The worst that can happen is they say no. The best case is they meet you, like you, and refer you. Don't be shy to really lay out your strengths. Even if you've never had a formal job before, you have skills. These skills have taken time to develop. Lean on those. Don't give up. You got this!
Thank you, will do
That's always been a a Catch-22, but it seems like it's gotten worse. With all the layoffs, there are a lot of experienced people looking for work and willing to take entry level jobs. And with the fear of recession looming ahead of us, it seems like a lot of organizations are just hesitant to hire anyone. But hang in and keep looking, being persistent is what will lead you to success.
Yes there is an always has been a Catch-22 but even years ago people took whatever job they could get to get work experience whether it be in retail, restaurants, digging ditches, etc. although employers are even more cautious about hiring those under the age of 45 due to their lack of work ethic plus there is all this deportation crap going around which has employers and everyone else scared.
Right? It's nonsense. However, I spoke with a friend last week who told me they apply anyway, even without the requirements, if you know someone at the company or have reached out to anyone there for a referral. She has also changed her resume to reflect the time they wants when she feels confident in the skills they needs. I will try that, do you think it could work? I need a job.
Connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Most LinkedIn members are either on the same boat as you, know where you come from, are employers or know someone who can assist. It is a Social Media Platform but for business professionals looking for talent or a folks with a desire to succeed. Networking is also a great way! I started as a Security Guard working local family gatherings followed by doing Executive Security (EP) on Red Carpet Events in Hollywood, CA protecting celebrities and other VIPs, for instance. All based on talking to other Security Professionals. Be humble but also be mindful of who you add to your circle of influence.
Thank you.
Unsolicited advice: seek out smaller offices/ companies…maybe mom and pop businesses to start. Schools and nonprofits.
I also am experiencing this same problem as you are going through. I also recently graduated as well and have been struggling with looking for jobs as well because a lot of entry level jobs asks years of experience. I am glad that I am not alone in this.
You just have to buckle down and be like everyone else when they started working which is to take ANY job that you can get regardless of if it is in your field / industry or not. You just need to START developing some work experience and prove that you are different than others of your same age. During the "Great Recession" that happened due to 9/11, there were many companies that were laying off people and even closing their doors which meant there were many highly trained and paid employees scrambling to take any job they could get whether it was in fast food, retail, restaurant, digging ditches, janitorial. Not only people you age and mine dealing with age discrimination and racism but due to technology there are companies that do not even bother actually reading resumes / applications as they let AI and ATS do the work for them and then there is lots of ghosting going on. For me, I am dealing with both ageism (am in my 50s), graduated from high school and college 30+ years ago, and since the "Great Recession" I have primarily been able to only find seasonal / temporary / contract work. In late February of this year, my first permanent position in years ended after almost two years due to the company closing and filing bankruptcy with the owner also taking his own life. Honestly, I would take whatever you can get and work on networking. A job is only a dead-end job if you let it be which I guess what I am saying is that we all have to start off at the bottom sometime and somewhere and climb up from there.
