I would be curious to know what they think the key to finding a good work life balance is. That's something I'm struggling with a lot and it seems like a lot of older professionals have it together a bit more.
My life outside work is more stable now that I’m older which makes it easier to want to go home / meet an important friend after work. Plan your evenings a week or two ahead, scheduling fun things, workouts when it suits you. and also ‘rest’ evenings to just be home quietly.
I also prefer to be in the office rather than remote as I get the social cue of others working/leaving to help me first focus and then finish work consistently. The commute also gives me a chance to decompress with a book or podcast and keeps my step count over 10k a day. A lot of my younger colleagues have never tried 4 days in the office for an extended period so don’t realise how freeing it can actually be to not work in your own home.
I’ve noticed too that as I’ve aged I’m happier in my own skin so less inclined to bend over backwards to impress a manager which reduces the temptation to work in an unsustainable way. Therapy and self development are long paths, but try questioning your motivation if you’re overworking.
I also am way more efficient than 10-15 years ago for two reasons. First, because I have a much better understanding of what tasks really move the needle and I skip lower value work. Secondly, my workload is so much higher now as a senior that I HAVE to refuse some work, so I’m constantly assessing what I really can manage and what has to be declined or delegated. When I could stretch 10-20% to do everything, I didn’t develop my ‘no’, but there comes a point where you just have to.
ooh I love this! What a great idea for question. For those 10+ years into their career, did you prioritize something early in your career that you wish you hadn't?
