No doubt you have read the thought provoking book by the senior JWT creative that ended up as a Starbucks barista. These things are frightening, and true. It doesn’t happen to everyone in our industry, but it happens to more than we’d like to admit. A career in the creative services industry nowadays is not for the weak of heart. All you can do to give yourself the best chance is to hustle hard to be on things that seem successful; work hard to stay on them; and sense when things are turning. I’d also recommend aggressive savings, no matter how hard that may seem. You’ve got to try and create a cushion.
Years ago , I had a salesman at a menswear store who told me he had been an award winning art director. Shook me to my core.
I think we all have to acknowledge the fact that we’re in an industry that peaked years ago and is rapidly declining. The money spigot (percentage of media billings) was turned off and salaries began their inevitable decline. The stress used to be balanced by the perks. Now most of the perks are gone. And the stress has ratcheted up. We used to get two weeks to concept a print ad. No wonder the work was generally better.
I’m at that point now. 6 months unemployed. No bites. Uber probably next month.
I’m afraid that this time it’s more than just doom and gloom.
Funny because it’s true.
I’m almost there myself
Ironically, it feels as if advertising as a business is aging out.
Yet it has happened in the past eras. I mean this doom and gloom atmosphere occured so many times yet it’s still here, because if there’s any industry who could make something out of nothing to survive and thrive, it is us. Don’t give up just yet. As long as there are brands and the need to sell something, they need creativity.
