If it's SCI, two years.
yes
It becomes inactive as soon as you roll off whatever project you needed it for. A new project can always pick it up and make it active again though, without a new investigation.
Interesting - the project sponsoring my clearance isn’t actually a project in on 😂
Once you leave the firm that's sponsoring you for the clearance, it becomes current and, as long as the underlying investigation is still in scope, can be reactivated with some minor paperwork within 2 years.
For example, if you were cleared at the Secret level in 2016, your investigation would be in scope until 2026. If you were to leave now, your clearance would become current and could be reactivated at any point within the next 2 years if you were to get a new sponsor. If you were to leave in 2025, on the other hand, your clearance could only be reactivated between your departure date and the investigation expiration date in 2026, not the full 2 years into 2027.
All that said, with Trusted Workforce 2.0 slooooowly rolling out, the clearance process will likely be at least somewhat different 2 years from now.
