What should I do with my lawn and curb appeal at this time of year? Both are ugly and need a makeover but I’m thinking anything I do now would die by December. Any thoughts?

Every summer we have a war with ants. Usually they pick a plant and like "nest" in the pot is there anything I can do to prevent this?
