I’m looking at doing the same thing, but at a new agency. As long as rent is paid and I enjoy the team it may be the mental break I need for a while. Stepping down at the same agency might be a little strange, like a demotion. But I’m ok doing it at a new agency given the work climate and needing a little back-to-roots work.
Good luck, I hope it works out! Our company is small with maybe 30 employees. It doesn’t feel as strange to stay but this is the first step to me possibly exiting. Right now I just need to step down for my mental health. I carry a lot on my mind with project planning, minor budgeting, practically HR, working on projects and promoting growth. I’m stopped every 5-10 minutes and to have an answer (sometimes on the spot) is tough. Then again, that’s how this company has been. They never had proper promotional paths or training. I got sucked into their way and when I try to fix it, it just becomes much more work.
I would try making the CD role what you think it should be. Your approach, sounds like, would to step back from some of the bs and taking a more hands-on approach with the work. I wouldn’t suggest taking a demotion.
Thank you. It went as well as I could hope for. I think. They did some apologizing, acknowledged that being a CD is way more involved than it use to be when they were in my position and that they’ve thrown a lot my way. They still want me involve creatively on all things within the company and not just on 2-3 accounts because they feel I am the top talent there so being part of all aspects is essential. They said that I’ve gained trust from everyone and my ability to collaborate with others are all things that make a good CD. I explained that brainstorming/helping others as a CD is different from doing it as a Senior designer because I’m not the final say. They are meeting with me in two days. There hoping that we can get through the fall season first. I’m a team player but I did make them aware that I have made up my mind. I’ll update things as they evolve for anyone who cares. Thank you for the replies.
