I’ve been in this business for 20 years. I’ve been to one creative retirement party. Plan your own exit—we don’t ’retire’, we get forced out.
Seriously. Like 0.4% of creatives are able to retire in this business, and 90% of them are the ones who make it to CCO level.
If I wasn’t in my mid-40’s I’d totally be looking to pivot. But since I am, I’m riding it out for another decade.
The industry’s volatility isn’t a threat to me. If anything, it’s a catalyst to diversify my creative capital. I’ll stay until the work stops sparking joy, then channel my skills into a legacy project, maybe a design incubator or a podcast dissecting the soul of branding. The future isn’t shaky, it’s just being remixed. 🎨✨
I’ve thought about pivoting myself, but for now, I’m focused on building skills that could transfer if needed. My exit plan is still a work in progress, but I do think it's important to stay flexible and open to new opportunities as they come, i'm about 15 years into this career so I'm really just not sure if it makes sense to pivot or just stay the course.
I’m saving like mad so I can semi retire at 55 (almost 47 now). What I do after that won’t be a serious career pivot. I will only have to make 50k a year until I officially retire at 65ish. I will likely do multiple things part time. Freelance, consult, create art, illustrate, teach…If I last longer than 55 in this industry, it’s gravy. If I get pushed out I’m still throwing a retirement party.
