Hi everyone! 👋 As women in HR, we often find ourselves walking the line between being empathetic leaders and strong advocates for policy and people. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how we can be bold in our roles... pushing for equity, innovation, and culture change... while also protecting our own boundaries and well-being.

How do you navigate this balance? What strategies help you stay grounded while still making an impact?

I think having your own strong morals about how others should be treated is a good starting place for being bold in an HR role. You can stand up for employees when necessary, but also see when you or your team are being taken advantage of.

I advocate for fair policies and empower my team to ensure everyone feels valued and heard. Prioritising open dialogue and collaboration helps create a better environment. Be the role leader you wish you had.

Definatly having your own strong morals in your role. I like to stand my ground so people don’t know to “push past me” and view me as a “there just HR” as that can be very degrading and I don’t like that attitude. Everyone should be treated fairly and with respect.

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. I’ve been in a near constant depressive/anxious state for family reasons for the last year and half, and am soon having my first kid. I’m scared shitless that I’ll spiral out of control both at work and at home if something doesn’t change soon. Any suggestions on how to keep this job and keep it together?
