Is your company a startup or more established/publicly traded? What type of role will you have? My experience from living in the Bay years ago was that life sciences clients leaned more towards business casual than casual. But I would lean towards business casual and see how your team dresses, or reach out to someone on the team and ask about the dress code. If you’ll be interacting with senior leadership you don’t want to be in a hoodie if they’re in suits and dresses.
Publicly traded but not a big company
I moved from Boston to the Bay Area. Things are much more casual here but officewear is company specific. I’d ask HR if there is an office dress code. If they say business casual, you can start with dark denim and a blazer with nice flat shoes. Better to dress up a bit at the beginning until you figure things out rather than be too casual. You probably will not need suits or heels but keep whatever you have just in case. And wear layers to adjust for the weather!
