Agreed! When you enjoy the work it makes it emotionally easier even if it is intellectually more challenging.
Definitely. I’m on a small legal team and support several different business units so the volume of my work is wild and varied, but it’s almost entirely comprised of the niche specialty I have so it’s all aligned with the area of practice I’ve built for myself and am interested in.
Yes! I work for a nice firm with nice clients and nice colleagues. Night and day from the last firm which made me feel like leaving the law lol. It really does make all the difference!
Honestly, true for me even without the good pay. Public interest litigation in an area I care about with good people is pretty sustainable.
I think the vast majority of attorneys did not know what their first practice area would be. I agree — knowing what you want to practice goes a long way. It shapes which law firm you end up at.
I graduated law school with a concentration in my specialty and a related certification, and then turned down my first offer outside of that specialty before accepting a role at a boutique that just handled that industry. Stuck with that my whole career and continued to specialize before going in house in the industry. I had bad grades and didn’t go to a top school, but I was purposeful about my career path.
I’ve seen a lot of others just accept the first offer they get and then stay underpaid/overworked/unfulfilled and then realize their exit options aren’t great once it’s too late.
It comes down to being appreciated and paid your worth. Being overworked, just because you are capable, and underpaid, makes the job unappealing.
