I’ve always wondered how are lawyers chosen to be recognized in magazines or online publications as “Best Lawyers”/“Rising Stars”? I’ve always assumed it’s a circle jerk of some sorts for Big Firms nominating each other, but I have no idea.

Don’t they (or their firms) pay the publication for the recognition?

like

No, the recognition is free, just the big ads/plaques and crap they sell costs money.

A lot of them are just peer nomination. It is not pure "pay to play" but the publisher's main goal is to sell plaques and adds so they just let the peer nomination play out and do not care much about the end result.

Chambers and a few other practice group specific publications on the other hand care about the quality of their ratings and have a much more comprehensive vetting including interviews with peer counsel and clients in the field.

I want to know how I win one of those 12” crystal trophy’s from super lawyers™️ to put behind me on my shelf for Teams calls. Hoping some day I’ll make the cut. Don’t have any flair right now ☹️

The “Super Lawyer”s nickname at my old office was Bobo [the clown]

I was literally asked by my firm if I wanted to use professional development funds towards super lawyers. Very easy to do if you are willing to pay

They pay.

No. You only pay for the extra ads, plaques, etc. The recognition is free.

Hey there! First post here 😊

I've done a lot of self-work this year re: where I've been most successful and fulfilled over my last ten years.. I'm 32 and have been in sales, sales leadership, and business leadership (I've been a ceo and am currently head of sales at a start up).

All that said, I'm looking for some words of wisdom on how to pivot to sales ops, Rev ops, or GTM strategy. The latter probably being my preference.

References, wisdom, and general advice appreciated!!

My marriage is beyond repair I think. Husband just said we keep having the same conversations over and over in the past year about things we’ve been trying to fix. Is a year enough time? 11 years together for reference. And I don’t think his statement is true - he literally mentioned one of those things last week that he was happy about. I just can’t do it with these vague statements in arguments.

What are some side gigs people have done that they wouldn't pursue again today? Are there any you'd still go for, but would approach completely differently?

Thinking along the lines of:
- Platforms you'd keep away from
- Gigs that people have missed the boat on by now or instead that have just taken off only now
- Specific hustles that aren't worth the upfront cost/hassle in setting up or that are super hard to hire for
- Policies/attitudes you'd adopt going into things this time around

Additional Posts in Law

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
