I would try to get some exposure to more senior people in the company - not just a level above you but also 2+ levels above. Do a good job, represent it with confidence, and show that you have some of the skills required at the next level. After a good deliverable, start a discussion about the vision for your career and promotion. I suggest thinking through your “wants” and desired timeline - your supervisor will likely ask you about it.
Rising Star
Tough for shy people to be direct… but think about it this way. If you don’t build up the confidence to be direct and get promoted, you will have to build the confidence to start interviewing anyway. Choice is yours.
This is absolutely right. Envision watching someone else less qualified than you get promoted before you just because you were too nervous. Sometimes I have to do things like that so that I will take advantage of the opportunity before me before someone else beats me to it. Then, I would meet with your supervisor and let them know that you've noticed the company is growing & you were wondering what career growth opportunities are available for you, as well.
In my experience, I always come prepared with documents that prove my value to the company and why I deserve the promotion. I also try to talk to management or my boss as soon as possible to avoid psyching myself out (it can really help with the nerves!).
My best advise is to sit down with your manager and let them know your goal and how quickly you'd like to get there. They should be able to help map out a plan for achieving that goal in a way that is structured and efficient. As far as overcoming shyness, I joined a public speaking course and it made a huge difference in my confidence level. Also comes with age and experience, but it's something worth considering in the meantime. Good luck to you!
I was recently promoted. I maintained good performance in my job and always be aware of that performance so that I could tell my superiors if I had to. I sat down and talked to my manager about my goals so that I was aware of them, and as time went on, I was given the opportunity when the position opened up in another team.
I am also shy, but finding a peer mentor, addressing the reasons behind my shyness (ADD/impostor syndrome) have helped me gain confidence. Also, keep in mind that we all struggle and there are times when no one knows what they are doing, at all. It's not just you.
I worked my butt off and kept really good notes of my progess and everything i had done to go above and beyond. When it was time for promotions I just advocated for myself and asked for what I wanted.
Was promoted after 7 years in the company. I've been assigned to so many departments and have worked with so many teams. Only when the management changed was my skills and capabilities were noticed.
I was pretty transparent with my previous manager about my goals. Within 3 years, I was promoted twice. It's also a good thing that the company does not tolerate connections.
