^False. Love in the UES where DB1 recommended. Excellent value. Safe neighborhood. Easy access to the Lex line. I still have a very active social life although I usually have to travel to it, but I love the fact that I can come home to peace and quiet. A lot of young people are moving that way. (Lex and East).
Avoid the UES if you want to have a social life. Check out Hell's Kitchen, Murray Hill, and the LES. You can get a true 2 bedroom for 3,000
Ues actually gives a great balance between social life and living condition. Only within 30m from midtown/downtown by train and 2nd avenue has so many bars and restaurants where yuppies hang out all the time. Actually better if u want to avoid the college kids in east village and west village tbh. And les has a mixed vibe and tbh not a great area to live in, more just to have fun/drunken night in the city.
Upper east side {86th St and above} has some really affordable option if you want to stay in Manhattan. Price range would be 1000 - 1500 a piece in a 2 bed. You can get a legit 1 bedder for 2.5k. If you don't mind Brooklyn, crown heights does have some really option {cheaper for bigger space}: 1.5k for a studio or so
West Village has some awesome vibes. Going to cost you though. LES is a bit under-gentrified for my tastes, although I usually end up there after a banger Fri. night. If you're making a true IB salary you can blow $1,600 easy per month for rent, wouldn't go above $1,800 imo.
UES small apartments but surprisingly can be great value of work/life balance. Best size/price may be Stuytown/ Peter Cooper or Murray hill. For social value maybe west village or Chelsea but look up what you are getting into. Do you have a price range, I can be more help then
TriBeCa if you can afford it! Close to everything from social to green space (battery park) but still can provide some peace and quiet at night.
UES for a new gun slinger? Really? Come on guys. Stay below 14th street. You can thank me later.
30 minutes to work is a long time. Most of my friends commute in under 20
Assume youre in New York to have an amazing time as well as work hard - one of the villages for sure (in order of awesoneness:) west village, greenwich village, east village, rent ranges from like 2500-3500 for studio/1 bedroom. There's plent of time for you to live some where pretty and boring with cheap rent. For atleast the first year you should live in the thick of it.
There's always Astoria. Really affordable 1BRs and great food/bar scenes. The commute is bearable if you're commuting to midtown...
I've lived on the UWS, UES and now currently in Hell's Kitchen / Columbus Circle area. It is true that UES is becoming more lively and hip, but depending on where you work, the commute could suck. As a new comer, I do think that living somewhere near the east village / west village area would give you more exposure to fun activities and help you make new friends faster...
I loved living in UES. I would go as high as 95th st for affordability, still has good bars and restaurants
I live by Gramercy, but would second the Astoria recommendation, especially if you work in midtown. Great social life and value per sq ft, only downside are higher priced ubers if you're out in the city.
Huge UES fan. You can absolutely have a social life up here. Two bed to myself in an elevator / doorman building for $3800
