Didn't really happen until my mid 50's. Brilliant guy. Respected my expertise. Understood how to leverage. Not threatened at all. Provided valuable input and was a huge advocate in public and behind closed doors. Felt a bit like when Obama took office - clearly a strong, smart leader but wish there were 10 more years of experience / wisdom baked in without tamping down the magic.
Since my first ad job - when I was 34. I got a late start, so I’ve almost always been a couple years older than my managers.
Chandler?
39, I think. Manager was 8-9 years younger. Didn’t bother me at all. She was a CEO within 5 years. Smart woman and a really good manager. Gave me the best advice.
Took a while actually. 37 and had to show a 28 year old ideas.
I’ve been reporting to CDs that were younger since I started in this industry at 31. But I’ve not yet had a younger manager. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.
At 44. But only because I didn’t want the job myself.
38. And once my new manager found out I was almost a decade older, things got very difficult for me. After I got pushed out, I learned everyone over the age of 40 that wasn't a partner got laid off within the next 12 months.
