Hypothetical but not hypothetical situation that I’m dealing with:

The company culture is do a stretch assignment and then you can have the role and title.

So if an associate making 40k wants to be a manager making 80k, the associate has to work at 40k with more work to prove they can do the manager job.

Ethically speaking, shouldn’t there be a mid-point increase for doing this stretch work and then if they don’t get the job, they go back to associate pay?

I know this normal… for most

This is actually extremely normal - they want to see you can do the role before the compensate you for it.

Also most companies only have 1-2 promotion cycles a year so you’ll probably be performing at the manager level for 6+ months before getting the title.

Most companies aren’t ethical or even logical, hope this helps.

So true.

Learn the stretch role, and switch companies. This way you can spend as little time to learn as you want, negotiate a higher pay elsewhere.

No. But it also ethically speaking, promote them when they show promise and consistency. Don’t make them do the job first. Let them grow into the job. But never have I seen a 1/2 raise.

This is very typical.
