I am about to lateral to a new firm. My husband and I had wanted to start trying for a baby soon (I am not getting any younger). If all things go well medically, I would only have been at the new firm for 10 months before wanting to take leave. Does anyone know if most firms will waive their year employment requirement for leave?
I don’t want to put my family plans on hold for a job.

This exact situation happened to me. We were trying for a while and I switched jobs and ten months later took my leave. They honored it so guessing that other firms will also. You won’t be qualified for FMLA but the firm will pay and give you the leave

Depends on size of firm. Most biglaw firms don’t have a required tenure before being eligible for mat leave (although you won’t technically qualify for fmla), but I’ve heard of many small and mid-size firms requiring a year.

So firm dependent, you'd be better off slyly asking around about your specific firm's leniency/strictness.

Having flashbacks. I thought about this too when I lateraled and it ended up taking me several years to get pregnant. Like you said, I’m thrilled I didn’t plan my job around getting pregnant, or vice versa. Most firms will take the long view and waive the 1 year requirement (I know Kirkland does).

Get short term disability just in case

Not 10 months for me but I was at 11months when I took leave and they didn’t bat an eye about it.
