I can’t imagine and this feels like malpractice but I haven’t worked at that type of PI environment

That's just not fair to the clients. You probably do a great job but there aren't enough hours in a day to handle that many properly. I suppose if they're all small then it's really just a repetitive formula, but if you have good cases mixed in it's not cool to load someone up like that.
Wow no that’s way too many cases
Edit to add its prelit only
If it’s a mill (which sounds like it is if you’re doing pre lit) then that is probably normal.
Where I worked, yes it was normal for an attorney to have that many cases assigned. Each Case Manager had a minimum of 100 pre-suit cases, so it just depended on how many of those you have working under you. My attorney had about 500 pre suit cases and 75 lit cases at any given time, with less support staff than what you mentioned
That's a recipe for malpractice. 500 pre-suit files alone is borderline iffy
You have 600 cases…?
Wtf? I don’t even understand this?

Sounds like you’re at a mill, in which case: yes, unfortunately your situation sounds normal. What’s the average lifespan of your prelit cases, and what’re the average settlement amounts?

Makes sense; definitely a mill. There’s a lot of PI firms in Southern California that are unfortunately like this. The last firm I was at was similar to this, but all the cases were in litigation. I was the only associate and was responsible for working on all 250-300 active litigation cases with the partners, but I wasn’t allowed to use any of the support staff. If the support staff messed anything up, it was always my fault because “the attorney is the only one that gets blamed no matter what”. Extremely toxic workplace and definitely crossing the line of malpractice, but unfortunately not uncommon in PI, especially in SoCal.
You should negotiate your pay structure to include a percentage of the attorney’s fees for every case you settle. You may as well get paid for all this risk and stress.
