I would think 85-105k. I'm actually in the same boat but 60k. Looking for a new job currently.
I’ve really seen it across the board. I know a lot in your base range but they get between 4-7% of the fee. You can easily double your base at that rate depending on how many cases you’re carrying. I work on fewer, more complex cases, so I prefer my base be higher with lower commission. How much do you bring into the firm and how independently do you work? I would either ask for a 5-10k raise and for 4% commission OR $90-100k salary and keep commission at 1%. If you’ve stuck with one PI firm for 3 years, you’re already in the minority. At 3-4 years, the firm has to value your contribution and want you to earn a livable wage.
OP,
In a similar boat. Going into third year of practice after 1 year at firm. Base 75k and I get 1/3 of files I brought in. So far have brought in five cases, two of them six figure settlement potential.
Is it insane to want to ask for 95k (hoping to land somewhere 85-90k) base, the same agreement for my origination, plus a small percent of anything I settle (2-5%)? I like where I work and the people for the most part. I work hard and am motivated but a small taste of any file i settle seems much more rewarding for long term prospects.
For base? The range seems to be approx 75-85k. Of course the fee arrangement matters a lot too. Some firms give associates (even when not primary) about 1% of the fee for any cases they work on in addition to the 1/3 for any cases you bring in - so it could easily average out close to 100k.
Yea I’m looking for a base, I get 1-2% on a set number of cases I can choose but my base is below 55K plus insurance so I don’t know how much to ask for to get where I need to be
Whatever you’re making, ask for more, ask for what you think is a stupid amount. Fee on a case is 40% how much of that is overhead, and how much is your Salary plus how much you get from bringing in a case. Show you’re worth it.
I get caught up between worrying that I may be considered greedy vs. worried that I’m undercutting my worth
My first job out of law school paid $48k with ZERO commission. I was doing nothing but shitty workers’ comp cases and busting my ass just to live paycheck to paycheck. I’m glad those days are behind me now.
Ditto. WC too. $45k starting out of school in Chicago. It got better after that first job, though. I think my second job (claimant WC as 2 yr atty) was $60k and they gave me a raise to $70K second year with them (3 ur atty). I got 40 percent of the fee for any WC case brought it. I got 50% of the fee on any PI case I brought in (which was great after bringing in a huge P med mal case). But the workload was too heavy once I had kids so I went in house def after that.
What is the average vacation time given for someone in this position as well? 2 weeks? 3 weeks?
We have “unlimited” PTO. But I usually end up taking around 10 days off.
