Frankly it seems like most people are lucky to get a callback these days. It's not a given anymore. I think with each application, you should expect to not hear back unless they want an interview. But once they've given you an interview then you should feel free to follow up

A friend of mine just went from a smaller operation to a huge company. The hiring process was comparatively intense, mostly because they were also transitioning into a union job. I would say it doesn’t hurt to follow up in a week if you haven’t heard anything.

There's nothing wrong with trying to follow up, but when dealing with a large organization things can seem fairly opaque. If you've got a contact to call, get in touch. But if you're trying to get through a maze on the telephone it may be frustrating. Generally speaking, a lot of companies will only get in touch if they want to interview you, so sometimes all you can do is be patient.

I always follow up in a week. No matter how big or small the company is I always follow up in a week. Keep applying to other places in the mean time.
