I’m an investment banking summer analyst at a major bank. I have an autoimmune disease and tend to get very sick very easily, especially when working long hours. I didn’t bring this up in the interview or hiring stages because I didn’t want it to disqualify me, and I hoped it wouldn’t be an issue, but the hours are really hurting my health. What should I do? I worked hard to get where I am, so I’d like to stay in IB if I can, but my health is obviously important too. Should I talk to my manager?

The reality of ageism hurts. Trying to stay relevant and likeable as a 33 yo female is something I’m having to work harder on than my actual job. I take virtual classes and do competitions to stay “current,” but I’m old enough to be the parents of some of my partners. I even attended an online seminar and asked the hiring manager at my dream agency if they’d ever consider hiring a mid-level 30-something, and she said that juniors bring the “freshness” and are more impressionable and adaptable.

I worked with this superstar consultant (who happened to be black). Once project ended I moved to another very similar project where one more consultant was needed. I recommended the superstar consultant obviously because he would have killed it in that role. Middle aged white manager talked to him and said he wasn’t a good fit. Literally brought on another white consultant who just joined the firm instead. I’m fuming.

Got in the final for what would have been a dream job (not now of course) and was asked to complete a pretty robust assignment for a launch strategy for a startup. I did everything, over-delivered really, a framework, launch strategy, platform analysis, and even an influencer piece (at their request). I had to present via Skype to the hiring manager and leadership. Only the hiring manager showed up. It caught me off guard (I know, rookie mistake) CONT’D...
