Same age boy here and we don't have screen times during weekdays and only 30 mins or special treat like movie night during weekends. My son most likely has ADHD (I have and pretty sure he has it as well) and screen time stimulates him way more which results in him not being happy with other stuff like playing, jungle gym or helping with his chores. We do a lot of outside time which in winters is a challenge, have a jungle gym and trampoline at home for him to get energy out, and make sure we are not on screens on weekends as well. In addition, we make weekends fun with activities like baking, building (ibricks is great if your child loves building) or play family board games.... My son also loves to clean so he does vacuum post every meal (majorly if he is not in his spicy mood) and takes out dishes from dishwasher. My wife and I take turns on activities so that we get an evening and morning off each...
PD1: I totally understand! My parents never invested in teaching me the skills while wife parents really walked with her at every step. It also helped that my in laws were settled in Singapore so they were more informed but it is hard no doubt. We have a therapist who specializes in neurodivergent kids and adults and has 2 kids of her own who have ADHD. We have a monthly session with her (it's more for me than my wife tbh, I had to relearn a lot of things from my childhood to be a better father) and it has helped us immensely. We also Dr. Becky though I often doze through her sessions but my wife has a lot of goodwill forcing us to listen to her... my wife's family also has a lot of kids and adults with ADHD and neurodivergent parents and support from other parents really help. I am sure you are aware of this but there is a difference between spirited kids and ADHD kids and most physicians/therapists/counselor miss that differentiation which results in undue medical treatment. My wife was diagnosed way early in life and was on medication for 5 years, with our son, our physician and therapist have not recommended medication yet though if needed, we wont be averse.
Audible worked for us. My 4.5 year old got instantly hooked to listening to stories in audible and we got rid of screen time.
Subscription was worth it for us.
Try and see if it works.
We came up with a schedule for our kid (same age). He gets one screen each weekday about 30 mins if he finishes his homework. We split it between TV, story time on phone, some coding app that my wife found on tablet, and khan academy on laptop. What he gets on which day of the week— we agree with him on Sunday.
