First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. I would say that you could ask for the full time. It sounds like they might say no, but there's no harm in at least asking.

One day is simply not enough. I hate working with folk that you have to lie to ti get what you are entitled to. I would take sick leave for a few days then take bereavement later. I would also talk to HR about it too...not to get your lead in trouble but to understand company policy. No one should expect someone to work through a traumatic situation. Thats abuse imo but others may see it differently. Lastly, the other issue is that you asked rather than told them. You gave room for a no when in this situation they should work around you.
