I've worked in retail for about 30 years and honestly, I don't really know how I do it either. I guess I don't really have any other options and I need to keep my job. But someday the disrespect can be pretty overwhelming. But then you just get over it and show up again the next day.
That is the spirit to let you keep going. You just forget the bad days and bad customers and keep going every day.
I did it for a couple years when I was first starting out and hated every second of it. I still hate dealing with complaints, but it's at least not the core of my job anymore. Anyone still in the trenches after decades has my utmost respect. You all have the patience of saints.
You are absolutely right about patience 😂. When you work in customer service, you test your patience every single day and you learn to deal with tough situations.

I’ve been in this industry for more than 15 years and sometimes I feel like how am I doing this for this long. I am now looking into switch careers. I’ve grown so much from working retail but now I want something different.
That is a good thought if you are thinking about changing your profession. If you have other skills, why not trying something different.
Every employee has their area, of strengths and weaknesses. A large factor for me, is how the company functions. Starting with the corporate positions. When companies have, a lack of concern. This is demonstrated and impacts all aspects.
The functionality of a company definitely has a role whether their employees will stay for longer or shorter period of time with it.

Totally get that feeling, some days it’s rough. I’ve seen coworkers who’ve been in the game for 15–20 years, and I think a lot of it comes down to finding ways to laugh through the tough moments and celebrating the little wins. Makes the chaos a bit more bearable!
Yup! That is right. You just learn how to make peace with those rude customers and just keep going.

I've been doing this for over 30 years. And I tell people that the best thing about my job is the customers (and why I keep doing it), but also the worst thing about my job is the customers.
17 years in sales and customer service. Managing multiple branches as well. Six years at my current job and last one was about 7 years or so. It can be exhausting but honestly my team bogs me out the most. I always lend an ear but lately they have been disrespectful and unhelpful. It’s heartbreaking.
