I have about $70k in savings, $30k in federal student loans, and want to purchase a new home in about 5 years (my partner and I are saving roughly $400k for the down payment).

Question: Should try to pay off my student loans now while interest is paused? Doing so would put me a little behind on the home savings goal but interest is only paused until the end of Sept. I’m wondering if it’s a missed opportunity to not just wipe out the debt.

Thanks for your time. And don’t forget to call mom.

Pay that loan off with savings and put the payment that you would have been making straight into your savings

What’s the interest rate of the loan? Buying a house “faster” may be more beneficial to you to lock in low interest rates granted in this economy interest rates are likely to be low for a long time.

I can’t remember exactly but somewhere between 5-6%. We aren’t in a rush to get the new home as we just bought our first place about 2 years ago. In 5 years we will definitely be ready.

I would imagine you can get a house at a lower interest rate than student loans, so I’d pay off the student loans

like

Great point. Our current rate is much lower than my student loans.

400k for a down payment feels like a lot - what home will you purchase?

Lol we live in NYC so $400k for a down payment isn’t too uncommon. We are deciding between a townhouse and a condo.

Wait what’s your annual salary? I want 400k

Looking for clarification about 529 plans. Tried to open 1 through Merrill and Fidelity and both gave me plans out of state only (Maine and NH). I live in TX. I am confused why they are not showing me options for Texas. Does it matter? If I get these out of state plans, can I still use them in Texas? TIA.

Have a Q on the Mega Backdoor Roth:

I contributed 10% of after tax pay to a normal 401k and called Fidelity to rollover the after tax amount to Roth IRA. The issue though is that the after tax amount gets invested in my 401k investment election. So by the time I called Fidelity to process the rollover, there was a $12 gain on after tax amount. Fidelity transferred the original after tax amount to my Roth and transferred $12 gain to traditional IRA

Is that correct? Any tax implications to this?
