I just had an interview with a firm whose recruiter told me that work life balance is really important there. That sounds great! But the hiring manager said she should warn me there is “occasional “ overtime. I asked what her definition of occasional is, and she said it’s hard to pin it down because it’s hard to know what kind of projects will come in. This made me very nervous. What are some polite ways to get clarification?

I would be concerned about the fact she wasn't willing to tell you outright. I would say something like "though I am willing to be flexible, I would like an idea of how many weeks per month you expect overtime, and how many hours an overtime week will roughly be. I just want to make sure we are on the same page."

I'm not sure you can. It sounds like she's being intentionally cagey, and I doubt further questioning will change that. I'd check the company page on Glassdoor. See if you can find reviews mentioning the amount of OT that's required.

I’m moving to LA in 2 months and want to stay in a short term rental before finding an apartment to rent for a full lease term. there is so much I don’t know, and the more I learn, the more I feel I don’t know about the city.
