The Former Lawyer Podcast may be helpful for you.
Trying a new job can’t hurt. You can always quit that. Avoid unemployment if you can.
You could also get a remote job reviewing document as they are always looking for JDs and licensed attorneys. I think one place to try, if you’re interested, is Haystack. Good luck!
I have had colleagues at two different firms quit and go teach high school. They seem very happy.
Now, I can’t even force myself to do work sometimes (to meet my hours), even at the prospect of losing my job.
I don’t know that a new attorney job right away is the answer. I have some money saved to be unemployed for a couple of months, but in reading how the job market is now, IDK what the true timeline would be for me to get another attorney job.
I have no idea what I’d do for a job otherwise, especially one that pays enough for me to cover my bills (VHCOL area). I don’t know where else to turn in terms of advice or figuring out what I should do next/in the meantime/while I recover from this burnout. Help?!?
Try a government position, local or otherwise, in any field. That’s what I did when I was burned out and thinking of leaving the law, and it has worked out marvelously. The stereotypes are largely true - the hours and benefits are better.
Keep your current position as long as you can but start working with a recruiter(s) ASAP. It’s easier to get a job when you have one already. Also consider using your FMLA time while looking for a new position. You can take a few months in between starting the next job.

I went in house as a 4th year and it was an absolute game changer. I was definitely burnt out from 4 years of practice (and frankly, abuse). 7th year now and love what I do but I needed to do a complete shake-up in my career to get here.
Maybe try finding an attorney job without a minimum billing requirement and see if you like that better?
Think about going in-house. If you’re not ready for (or finding) an in-house role right away, consider contract management/administration. I am now in-house, but I got my foot in the door at my company via their Contracts team. There was a bit of a learning curve at first, but it was SO easy compared to law firm life. Did that (and therapy) for about a year to give myself space to bounce back, and then applied into the legal department when they had an opening.
Note that Contracts will be a pay cut. But to me it was worth it to have the freedom of an 8:30-4 schedule lol
Can you take a leave of absence
You could probably be a solo for a little. You might only need a few clients to meet your bare minimum expenses and it will help gain significant time to recover.
