Im a mid-level associate in a small practice group. I was assigned a mentor who gave me unexpectedly negative feedback without much context or contact. I’ve tried to get more helpful workstreams, but I keep getting restaffed with this person. It’s starting to feel like a no-win dynamic—communication gaps, visibility issues, and escalating tension whenever I try to clarify expectations or loop in others. I want to protect my reputation and sanity. Has anyone navigated this kind of situation?

I would start talking to recruiters or your network. Unfortunately it can be very hard to get out of those situations.

I also experienced something similar. The unjust negative feedback preceded a failure to elevate me to the next class year, so I believe it was intended to lay the groundwork to pay me less. (The firm had a pattern of not elevating female associates, keeping them at the same class level for several years.)

If you are feeling the mental health effects of this situation, you might be eligible for short term disability leave. This would allow space from this toxic situation and time to search for another job.

Also, did you happen to make any formal or informal workplace complaints, or disclose any health issues, before this negative feedback began?

I've been engaged in the Google SWE interview process for the last couple months. Just got confirmation today I passed Hiring Committee and will go into team matching.

Wanted to know, is an offer likely at this point or is it a coin toss? I am open to most locations and most areas of work aside from cloud and mobile, but am willing to be more flexible if need be.
