People don’t realize how much an effect having the best weather in the US has on your mental and emotional state. I used to love the hustle and craziness of NY but as I got older I really enjoyed the laid back chill vibes of LA. There’s so much good food here and so many different cultures. You’ll miss really good NY pizza but other than that you can get everything else here.
The beach and really good Mexican food. Plus you are 2 hours from skiing, the desert and Mexico.
It really depends on where in LA you will live (and crucially what your commute is). Every area has its pluses and minuses, but if you go in being exited about the beach but end up living in the valley I imagine you’ll be disappointed.
I lived in NYC for 7 years and then moved to LA after getting recruited for a job out here (also moved with my partner). I was resistant to the idea at first- classic snobby NYer- but we just had our 7 year anniversary in LA and I love it here. My advice is to not attempt to recreate your NY life here and instead embrace what LA has to offer. We chose to live on the west side because we wanted to be close to the beach. We set our housing search radius to within 5 miles of work and in an area that had decent highway access so we could get around easily. (Landed in the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica.) In NY it’s easy to discover new places just by wandering around, but I’ve found that in LA you have to seek them out and do a little more planning. Try your best not to compare- they are different cities with different strengths (and weaknesses) and you owe it to yourself to give LA an honest chance.
What I love: yes the weather, but also that within 30 min from home I can be at the beach, or on a hike, or in a walkable urban neighborhood, or at a world class museum, or at a park, or at a stadium/ arena, etc (LA is vast but there’s quite a bit that’s accessible). I love the lifestyle- somehow I feel like we get more out of the day here. I love the farmers markets. I love the different vibe of the neighborhoods. I love the food choices (yes you can get decent pizza and bagels here). I love the group of friends that I’ve made. I love that every apartment/ house I’ve lived in has had more space than NYC. I love that flowers and plants are always in bloom. I love the prevalence of ice cream and donuts. I hate gridlock but I actually like driving. I love the weekend trip options- San Diego to the south, Santa Barbara and wine country to the north, mountains to the east.
I could go on but I think you get the idea. Feel free to DM if you want to chat more. Good luck!
Thanks so much for the thorough answer! I think you’re right about not comparing them. Thanks!

Don’t underestimate the power of amazing weather on your mental health. I’ll be having a bad day and then take a walk in the park, 72 degrees and sunny clear blue skies, a nice breeze and no humidity instantly improves my mood.
Great food out here — NY basically only has pizza and bagels over LA but that’s rapidly changing there are several great pizza options now. All other kinds of foods LA is equal or better than NY.
