I mean…if you are reliable in that you are faithful and compassionate, I’m not sure why in a new relationship, you need to be an “emotional rock” for someone. You worked hard to get to where you are. I would just have the guy deal with it. If there is an illness in the family or some other serious crisis, it would of course be different. But this seems like you are overburdening yourself with this guys feelings.
I have SUFFERED like in multiple relationships trying to be warm and feeling even when I wasn't and finally ended up with someone who did not require that of me. You are in what mood you're in, you are what you are. If you want to move some things around so that you can be more present because that it is a priority then you do it. If you don't you don't. Your relationship may certainly end if your partner is asking for more than you are or can give, but to me the loss of self and pretending are much worse than the end of a relationship that was causing that.
Partnership destroys relationships and families all the time. If your SO does not feel prioritized for a significant length of time, your relationship will likely fail. Maybe not now, but the resentment will build.
This could be completely off base, but my initial reaction was— this is probably a straight relationship with a man who doesn’t have a therapist. Is this coming from you or your new partner? And if the latter, are they aware that this is crunch time for your career?
I’m sorry OP that sounds really tough. I would try to give yourself some grace, especially if this feeling is coming from you and not him. That sounds like a lot of emotional support even for someone with a 9-5 job.
Both of you need to communicate clearly and prioritize. If your priorities don't align right now, might be best to move on. Easier to leave a new relationship than one you're stuck in and (possibly) develop codependency or other unhealthy patterns in. And as others have said, partnership can and does ruin relationships. Everyone has to be on the same page about what's going on. Have that discussion early on. I'm all for doing everything possible to work things out in relationships, but if this is new, make sure you're not wasting your time (and his).
Making partner is hard work. Having a partner at home who doesn’t understand that and can’t support it isn’t going to work.
Why do you feel like you need to be a “warm” “feeling” gf? Presumably he has made you feel that way (even if not on purpose). It doesn’t sound like a good match. I don’t know that I’d go as far as the comments below saying that it’s “toxic,” but it sounds like he’s insecure attachment style, and that’s not a good match with successful lawyers. I say this as an insecure attachment style who would never date another lawyer, lol.
Communicate the importance of your job to your partner and just make sure you are on the same page. It sounds like there may be so uncommunicated expectations of one another.
Also ask yourself what means more to you. If you care more about your job, that’s totally fine and you are allowed to prioritize that so long as it’s not at your partner’s detriment. Respect his or her needs, but also make yours known. Hopefully sitting down and talking about it will paint a clearer picture for your future together. Make sure he/she knows what the next 5-10 years look like for you and if he/she can sign on for that journey with you. As someone else said, partnership track will ruin your relationships. Just do what you can to protect those relationships by setting realistic expectations.
