How big is the company? Do you report to the CEO? It’s a tough situation — but part of your job is to be assertive and advise the business/build a team around you that is respected to do so. Unfortunately, though, if you don’t have buy in from leadership and they generally don’t see legal as worthy of having a seat at the table it’s likely a dead end.
It's a tech start up valued in the mid-100millions. It's actually just the CEO. He does not want legal to involved in anything other than a few key things and takes incredible risks. He's this way with other departments too where he takes the final call/ makes the decision. He used to run everything when the company was small and I think he has trouble letting go and trusting others to do the job he hired them to do.
I can relate. Sometimes legal is a last thought rather than an integral part of the process, and they won't bring you into the conversation until near the end (if at all).
I've made some headway by just taking on some subjects on my own accord, so that I make myself more indispensable (e.g., compliance, cybersecurity). Also you can build relationships with people other than the CEO so that they go to you directly for help rather than routing it through the CEO.
Ultimately though, if leadership treats legal as a necessary checklist rather than a key partner, then it won't be a good fit long term.
Thanks, this is good advice. I'll take a look at the Kolbe Index.
