Is freelancing as a CD challenging? I would like to cut ties with my agency and work independently, but not sure what the right way to approach this is.

Most places don’t want freelance cds / you’re rarely managing full time resources, think of it more like freelance senior creatives that don’t require any direction or hand holding

If you have a job now, keep it. No matter how much it sucks, attempting to freelance in 2024 is way worse.

The only challenging thing is finding any work right now.

CD freelance doesn’t exist anymore for the most part. You’ll have to take SAD roles/pay for sure

I’ve had some gigs freelancing as a CD but those are relatively rare. More often you’re brought in to roll up your sleeves and do the work at a level they can’t get from their fulltime staff. When you have a job booked, I’d say it’s less challenging than being a fulltime cd. Because you’re just focused on doing one thing really well and don’t have to worry about politics. But the hard part is having the network and hustle to consistently find work.

When you DO have to manage, I’ve found it tricky…. Especially with full time staff that views you as an impediment to a project they may have been gunning to step up/manage.

You can freelance as a CD but unless you are filling in for a mat leave you will be doing work. That said, it’s all about your network. You have to get the word out that you are freelancing so you are on everyone’s radar should something pop up.

It depends. Usually you'll find out if there is already a CD on the brand. In which case, you are just a very expensive freelancer, and you need to be cool with that. Being a very expensive, very good freelancer is lucrative, btw. But does it hurt your soul? Yes.
