Putting it in context helps. It wasn’t just you in a vacuum - it was you and 1500 others.
I agree with this. The context does matter in this situation. Being laid off isn't a bad thing but you definitely want them to know it wasn't just you.
I don't think it could hurt, personally. Layoffs happen, hiring managers know that. But the more opportunities you have to diplomatically explain your situation, the better.
RIF is basically corporate shorthand that HR folks are used to hearing. It signals it was part of a broader business decision, not something performance-related. You weren’t wrong to say "laid off," but "RIFd" might just sound more neutral and less emotional.
I agree that mentioning a RIF sounds better and establishes that it was a widespread event and not something particular to you. But if you say you were laid off it means much the same thing. The way word gets around, depending on where you worked it may be pretty obvious what happened anyway, so there's no point in trying to figure out how to spin it.
Seems like splitting hairs. Laid off sounds good to one, then RIF sounds better to another, but how are you supposed to know? Agree that context matters more than word choice.
Personally they sound the same to me… No one is laying off top talent, so I’m always concerned in interviews when I hear they were part of a RIF
