For what it’s worth, I plan on being an ACD for the rest of my career. Being a full blown CD sounds like no fun.
Being a CD is not fun after the first couple years. I miss being an ACD. I miss doing the work and being recognized as the leader at the same time (and the autonomy). I miss being the one that was tightest with the client. I don't miss the pay but I miss the complete lack of silly responsibility that comes with the CD title.
Do you like doing really complex budgets and talking to finance every other week? Do you like development plans and HR change management workshops? Do you like politics and backstabbing from other directors? Do you like firing people? Stay an ACD.
I was ACD for 5 years before jumping to another agency. Sam reason as you. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. CD jobs aren’t easy to come by.
100%. There are way fewer CD spots than ACD spots.
It doesn’t look bad at all, that’s the last thing an employer would consider
Work on a pitch and win the business, then be the one to lead the account. I know that’s easier said than done but I’ve seen that process happen.
Agree. Sometimes you have to win more than one. Gain the trust of agency leadership—not just creative leadership.
You don’t need to constantly get promoted to be considered great at your job. My 2 cents.
Never.... If you see a CD job you're interested in, apply.
Are you getting decent pay increases? Can you ask for a VP or SVP ACD?
Go for the EVP Associate Art Director role
It doesn’t cost them anything to change your title. And they could always give you a nominal raise.
