I had the entirely wrong frame of mind when I got into my company. I wanted to look good, not take off, and prove myself. Turns out, it did nothing for me. We get 1 week sick and 4 weeks vacation annually and I make sure to use every bit of it up now throughout the year.

Totally get that - I used to think the same way. But time off is there for a reason, and using it doesn’t make you any less committed. Glad you’re taking full advantage of it now and it really makes a difference!
We don't get separate vacation and sick days, everything is lumped together under our PTO plan. PTO doesn't roll over and isn't paid out in my state, so I make sure to use all of it every year. I have 25 days this year. I'm using 15 for vacations and leaving the other 10 for random sick days and long weekends throughout the year.

That sounds like a smart approach - using most of it for planned time off but keeping some in reserve just in case. With no rollover or payout, it definitely makes sense to take full advantage each year! Btw 25 days a year is pretty good!
My company offers separate sick days too, and people use them in all kinds of ways, which I think is sort of tacitly understood even if nobody talks about it. Some people only take them when truly sick, and then others treat them like backup PTO. I don't think healthy people should be forced to forfeit the time off just because they don't need the sick time, everyone should be able to use it however they want.

Totally agree -if the time is offered, it should be okay to use it in a way that supports your well-being, not just when you're sick. Everyone recharges differently, and flexibility makes a big difference.
If we don't use our sick days, we lose them. I'm inclined to start taking them around November and December if I still have them. That's time that I earned, I'm going to use it on my mental health.

That makes total sense - if it’s use-it-or-lose-it, there’s no reason not to take that time for your well-being. Mental health matters just as much as physical health.

I get unlimited sick pay and only a set amount of vacation time. It’s a huge no no to try to phrase a vacation day as a sick day, so I only use them when I’m sick. With that said, having unlimited sick time has helped me actually take time when I am sick because it’s not something I have potential to save up.

That’s a great point - having unlimited sick leave really takes the pressure off and makes it easier to actually rest when you’re sick. It’s good to keep vacation and sick time separate, but having that flexibility for illness is such a relief.
