Typically no.. depending on your status and chain they also may owe you compensation if they don’t let you stay. If that hotel is sold out there is a good chance others nearby are too. It is their problem to sort out instead of making it your problem
The hotel, not you, needs to find a comparable or better room for you. Marriott has a specific policy for this depending on your status, and I imagine the other chains do too.
“Call all the people staying here for free or reserved early and make them pay market rate elsewhere so we can get market rate for those rooms.” Sounds like they want to make an end run around the flag

Lol how convenient for the hotel
Personally I’d make sure that there are other available rooms nearby. As long as there were I’d force the hotel to “walk you” and request compensation via points for the inconvenience.
If rooms were really short I’d probably book another hotel myself and save the hassle at checkin and not run the risk of a super long runaround.
