As a full time driver in this city, I cannot think of a better idea. The more green choices and accessibility the better.
Loving the positivity and well-researched thoughts in this thread! Bike lanes do not contribute to congestion, and are definitely better for local businesses. Happy to see more of them, and increased safety around them.
- avid biking commuter.
I’m all for it. Cycling in Toronto is so dangerous outside of bike lanes. The city is so slow at investing in a proper public transit system, cycling is still the preferred option for a lot of folks.
I don’t ride bikes at all and I’m all for it.
Having read the official studies I don’t understand where the businesses are coming from - yes, it is an inconvenience during construction- but it is better for them in the long run as most customers for most businesses in the city do not come by car, and this makes the pedestrian realm more friendly and accessible.
And cars have no valid complaint either with most of the streets having on-street parking, it is slower for vehicles to deal with people merging in and out of the side lane when a parked car comes up then it would be if those lanes are repurposed for bike lanes - safer for both parties and there is enough parking on side streets and lots.
I like the way you think
Personally, I think it's great. Yes, there will be some minor inconveniences, but those will be temporary. Totally worth it for the positive impact on the environment and people's health/wellness. No matter what they do, there will always be someone that complains.
Yeah, I don't really understand why businesses are complaining. I don't see how it would impact the traffic to their business.
I don’t ride bikes, I prefer to walk and take transit - but if better cycling infrastructure is a key part to a more sustainable city and more equitable transit, I’m all for it.
We should also widen the sidewalks and get more express busses and light rail going as well :)
While we’re at - how great would it be to have a dedicated running route around the city. Could be fun for international marathons or even to go an amazing run!
Adore these ideas so much!
We definitely do need more cycle lanes
It's a bandaid solution used to win local votes. It's not going to exponentially inspire a lot of people to start commuting by bike. We don't have a year round climate for it. Something like 75% of people have a commute longer than 5km, in the summer you risk showing up sweaty, not all companies have showers. You cannot add bike lanes without improving the public transit first. It's just going to make traffic worse for both public transit and cars. It's not even a green intiative when you consider how much more cars will idle now in traffic. There is a time and place for them and in this city it isn't right now until people have actual reliable alternatives to driving that don't add 2-3x the time to their commute.
All for it! Think it will be a great addition to the city.
Please god, no. So tired of these bike lanes causing so much traffic in the city. Not to mention these cyclists whip in and out of traffic as if they won’t get hit. Infuriating.
Not sure I’m understanding. Your point is around 1: Traffic? Cars take up a ton of space and are the main drivers of transit congestion. We often have 1 car with only 1 driver going in the same direction as other cars with single drivers. Bikes occupy less space and can more dynamically move around.
2: Safety, understand what you’re saying about certain cyclists - but we can all agree that the amount of driver caused deaths this year is getting out of hand. We’ve seen cars hit streercars, take out pedestrians waiting for the light to change and crash into buildings.
You can be upset with individual cyclists, but the systemic issue of cars having priority in transit is not working out too well.
And this is a problem across North America.
If they want to put in more bike lanes, the City needs to turn a lot of roads into one-way streets, like in Manhattan, so cars have more than one lane and things can keep moving.
It’s all a mess right now. Public transit is not sufficient to handle more capacity. The roads are clogged with cars. The bike path network is incomplete and unusable a lot of the winter.
I’m thinking more Amsterdam than Manhattan.
Love it!
But we also need to get people riding in them instead of on sidewalks.
I don't really ride bikes but I am all for it as well. I think it is a really great thing that lots of people will use. Like someone above said it is inconvenient and kind of annoying that there is construction but ultimately it will be a good thing I think.
Keep em coming. It's been proven to improve outcomes for shops.
I love it. People need to get out and exercise and be more healthy. I love the impact on the environment. It costs less than gas. I don't see any issues with it at all.
I can see both sides. It causes traffic on some streets because the lanes are dwindling and becoming more narrow, but I'm also happy because it will keep bikers of of the street holding up lanes.
Yikes
as someone who lives in the city and drives, reducing a road from 2 down to 1 lanes is a terrible thing for traffic. expect more congestion and delays everywhere if this continues to happen
