For 2 of my 3 pregnancies I found out within a week of my start date. FMLA was good to me.
honestly, in consulting we’re generally pretty privileged to put FMLA at the bottom of the 2-3 maternity leave benefits you’d get, so I’d rather hear you understand how that works when asking this question.
The only time I would recommend changing jobs around pregnancy, based on what I’ve seen with friends and family, is to either a) not change, or b) only change if the new company offers STD/Parental Leave benefits as of day 1 - while not the norm, it’s becoming more common so there are a handful of options out there
Yes, so I had my IUD removed right before starting at a new Job. What I realized was I needed to wait until I would be covered by Fmla at the time of my delivery before my husband and I started trying to get pregnant. So we waited 4 months then started trying. For me, I was not interested in funding my own maternity leave.
i changed jobs right after i found out i was pregnant
I think you just have to be aware of the soft downsides: if someone fires you or even materially changes your role you have cause to take action, but you will be trying to build a new network, establish yourself, get involved in good projects, etc. at a time when you are going to have more constraints and with a time you’ll be out for awhile upcoming. To be fair, 9 months (albeit may be shorter depending) is probably enough time to do all that and you wouldn’t telling them for a bit anyhow. But that’s what I’d weigh
My advice would be to follow your career goals and you can make decisions regarding your family if and when that becomes a consideration. It might take months or years to get pregnant and then pregnancy is 9 months as well if full term. If you are already pregnant I would not move jobs because of what LEK said, but if not pregnant yet, go for it because otherwise it may be years before you leave. The first 1-3 years is grueling and adding a job search and proving yourself in a new place is going to be an added challenge. Ideally I wanted to move 4 years ago but then had 2 kids in a row and am only now able to start thinking about a switch.
Yes. Went on maternity leave a week before fmla kicked in. It was fine.
I started a job while 4 months pregnant. Great company, so I still qualified for paid leave.
