I was the same way when this happened! Get yourself some well-made, dark wash jeans, great fitting button downs, solid loafers or flats, a solid pair of boots and a great warm coat. These are a foundation that will take you through years, while things like sweaters and cardigans and accessories will always go in and out of style.
Congratulations. How exciting. I would use pinterest and create boards to help you discover and catalog looks you like which can help you then find the stores you want to shop with. You can use those boards at stores to have the folks working there help you create the looks. (or you can even use them with stitchfix.com stylist. Google Capsule wardrobe and invest in staples. For work, I personally love Madewell, Anthropologie, Banana Republic and White House Black Market. Good luck, have fun!

Is there a Nordstrom near you? The sales associates are quite good and can help identify well-made, well-fitting pieces across many brands and styles. Going in for a consultation and telling them you’re aiming to build a strong capsule wardrobe as a starting point would set you up with a fantastic base!
Bring pictures of looks you like in magazines so they get a sense of your style
I know this suggest might seem old fashioned but Talbots makes great suits in a wide range of sizes and is my go to. For something a bit funkier, Wild Fang and Fluevog shoes.
I love fluevog
First, HUGE CONGRATS!!! Nobody laughing, just supporting! ❤️❤️❤️ So many great ideas here! Also, stores like Anthropologie have “rent” options, that you can buy if you love a piece. And check out J Crew has some well-made suits and classics pieces. I know you’re in London, but pretty sure you can shop online and get shipped to you, altho maybe costly. Also, most dept stores have shoppers who can assist, which is a good idea! Have fun! So happy for you!

Oooh the rent option thing is cool!
Clothes are fun but don’t go crazy. Save that money girl!
And congrats!!!!!!
Check out Aritzia. And congrats!
Frame and Mother jeans as well!
Get it!!!! For nicer work pieces I like COS. But I also have 2 kids and need to be cost-aware…so I shop sales and mix nicer pieces with stuff from GAP, Old Navy, ASOS, etc.. Also depends on what style you want to aim for. I like minimalist. Just search for lookbooks online and if there’s a specific style that speaks to you, research where the clothes came from.
Oh! And some places can help you figure this out like trunkclub.com and some places will do capsule collections that will give you all the high-quality basics you need to make a ton of different outfits, like Universal Standard.
Congrats! I hear ya - come from the same background and still have a hard time spending money on myself. Look for quality consignment stores - not sure where you are but they are popping up all over. In CT (yeah, I know…) there is Roundabout- and you can get quality brands (Theory, Rag and Bone, Vince…) at great savings. Love the Nordstrom recommendation. Again congrats and take your time developing your style.
My WASPY mother always said that clothing/bags covered in with logos are like "wearing a price tag" which screams tacky. Well-made basics are the way to go! I agree with other posts about brands like Vince, Rag & Bone and Theory for business casual work clothes that last years. For a work bag, I love Cuyana and also have a nice big Vince tote that has lasted years. A nice coat or leather jacket will also serve you well.
LOVE everything from Madewell! Also Aritzia. And if you’re looking to splurge you can’t go wrong with timeless pieces from Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren. Congratulations on your success — as someone who also grew up lower income, I can’t wait to get to the same point someday ❤️🥳 get it!!!!
I would recommend setting up a personal shopping appointment at Saks. I know it’s quite luxurious, but the items you can get there will last decades. For trendy items, don’t shop there, but for classic pieces like cashmere or coats or quality shoes, Saks can’t be beat.
No one here is laughing at you. This site has become a place I visit less and less because of some toxic 'tudes. GO GET IT!!! Proud of you. Everyone has already covered the staples. I would just say find something you like (after trying a bunch) and stick with it. For me, it's Levi's for jeans. I know my size, I trust them, I'll wear nothing else. And while I'm here, download the Rakuten extension for serious cash back opportunities!
I am only here for the comments because I have no idea how to dress myself but CONGRATS!! Do not be ashamed, GET THAT BAG!!

Thanks! 😊
Not exactly what you asked, but @merrittbeck on IG posts quarterly capsule wardrobes (with links to high quality pieces) and really matches your style, based on the pics you posted. Could be helpful inspo once you get your base down!! Have fun 😊
Oh thanks! I’ve needed someone else to follow and she looks great
Congrats!! Cole Haan makes my favorite black flats - classic and so comfortable.
Congrats! 🎉 proud of you!
Nordstrom has the best range to scope out your taste/style.
That’s awesome! Congratulations. Some of my favorite places have been Kate Spade, Coach, Grayson, and Wren & Glory.
So happy for you sis, I can relate. Love your attitude snd spirit!! 💕💗
Aritzia, Zara, and free people are my favs!
