Idk but seems like the formula involves being a relatable character yourself (some comedians use sterotypes) and using this characters depth to come up with their thought process or reaction to a scenario or thing about life and tell a story to elicit a funny reaction from the audience. I wanted to become a stand up comedian at one point.
Move to NYC or LA. Write a ton. When you’re done writing, write some more. Once you have finished writing your set/material, go to open mics a lot - like 3-5 a week. The aim is to get comfortable with and lock in your set and meet people in the industry.
Do what it takes to get more stage time, including:
- Performing at “bringer” shows
- Selling tickets for stage time
- Working at the club for stage time
- Paying for writing classes to get stage time at the end of the 4-6 week class
Be nice to people in the industry. There are a lot of selfish, narcissistic, 💩holes, and people that are nice, reliable, and easy to work with get further, faster.
Always write and refine your material - make this a religious habit.
That covers a lot, but DM me if you want more info.
Make sure to pick on the people in your audience. Legends are born through this method.
Wow these are all great responses, really appreciate the insight everyone
Well frankly, the mere fact that you’re asking on fishbowl means you’re probably not very funny.
Post short clips of your standup routines on IG and TikTok to gain a following, then you will have a fanbase willing to pay for your shows. You can also post the full videos on YT and monetize them.
