Remember what happened and consider it a valuable lesson. And remember the old adage, which is always proven true: "No good deed goes unpunished." If you try to be a good person and help out, there's always a chance something will come back to bite you.

Unfortunately.. but then if you say no then it looks like you don’t care

Ask for a comp day they’ll bank on you not doing so

No! You gave up a none work day and worked. It’s not inefficient, it’s balance

I am sorry to hear that, that's not fun. For the future, when someone asks for help, be specific to say: " I can help on Friday, but I already have plans for the holiday." Clear communication always helps.

I really like this. I felt put in a corner when they randomly said “expect to work on Monday” when I said I won’t be available on sat / sun.

Saying no does not mean you don’t care. In this scenario, when you agree to step in on something just say up front, “I can help with this, I’ll do XYZ today and then when we get back from the holiday weekend I have X hours to give and can get this completed.” If the answer is we need it done during the weekend then you say, “so sorry, I misread the ask, but I have holiday plans so maybe a different resource is best for this work.”

This is really well articulated, shows that you want to help but with limits. Thank you!

I told them I don’t work on Sunday due to my religious beliefs. They never asked me again. Occasionally I’ll get sucked in to work on Saturdays for. A couple of hours but that’s it.
