I’ve been listed for other people and have never been contacted
Same here. I have friends list me as a reference all the time and not once have I gotten a call. I always wonder how much references are being checked.

Most of them round here for big companies just direct you to HR so you don't bother any of your old colleagues or managers it's just done and dusted as routine.
When I start job hunting, I give my references a heads up that they might get a call any time between now and the next few months. I don't feel the need to update them every time I hand my references over to a company.
Yeah that’s a pretty good idea! So it’s not sprung on them!
It’s usually best to list references once you’ve passed initial screenings and the employer is seriously considering you. For applications that ask right away, provide 1–2 contacts who are okay being reached, or simply note “References available upon request” until later.
In my opinion I agree! I couldn’t imagine wasting my time and giving references if there not quite needed yet!

I only tell my references when I’m asked for them after final selection. At that point I reach out to my references and let them know they may get a call.
Yeah that’s a good idea!

I don’t have references until they are asked for. When they do ask, I know they are thinking of me as a serious candidate for the position
