We introduced dairy milk at some point shortly after he was a year old and we’d give some bottles that were 3/4 pumped milk, 1/4 dairy milk, then moved to 50/50, and so on until he was on full dairy milk bottles and we had no pumped milk left.
Congratulations— a year of pumping is such an accomplishment and labor of love ❤️
I reduced my 5 pumping sessions really slowly over a couple months, starting with cutting my 4th and least productive pump in half (down to 10 minutes) for a couple days, then eliminating it. Then after a few days, I cut my second pump of the day in half for a few days and then eliminated it so I was only pumping 3 times a day. Then I cut my middle pump so I was only pumping twice a day for a little bit. Then I cut my first pump of the day by a few minutes each day, then I cut my last pump of the day by a few minutes each day. After getting down to 5 min a day before bed for a few days, producing only 0.25 ounces a day, I stopped. I also drank peppermint tea, which helped reduce my supply. I haven’t pumped for a week now and no significant discomfort yet. (Still wearing unstructured nursing bras but gonna move back to underwire soon).
I had a freezer stash I started introducing to supplement freshly pumped bottles as my supply dropped, and started introducing formula (starting with just one bottle a day and building up after that) part way through.
Thank you!! 😊
Ahhh weaning was the best, after I did it of course. I felt bad ending at 14 months, like I could’ve been providing more for my baby but was being selfish. I slowly was taking pumps away throughout the year. Once I was at 12 months, I think I was at 4 pumps a day. Then transitioned to 3. My end goal was 2 pumps a day (night & day) & if my supply would’ve kept up, I was going to keep going, but my supply dried up pretty quickly so I took it as a sign that my body wanted to rest 😂 we also started supplementing with milk once my freezer stash was running out. So we started with 3oz bm, 1oz whole milk for a week or so, then 2oz / 2oz. and so forth until it was all whole milk
14 months is incredible! So much sacrifice and effort went into that. You should definitely not feel bad!
If you are prone to clogs or are worried about them/mastitis, consider using sunflower lecithin while weening. Ice packs and ibuprofen for inflammation. As others said, slowly reduce time on the pump by session. Cabocream is also a lotion that you can apply that will help. Sudafed and peppermint tea help too!
