The kids are old enough to start asking interesting questions (rather than just believing everything you say), and making me think. They are also old enough to wipe their own noses, tie their own shoes, and zip/bitton their own coats.
But they are young enough to be willing to do silly things. Many of them are young enough that their masks are not fully in place, so you can sort of see what they're thinking. Most of them are young enough that they really visibly respond to positive reinforcement.
They are rarely boring. They keep me on my toes because they are changing so fast that even they aren't sure what's going to come out of their mouths. Most of them really do love to learn new things, even if they don't want to work for it.
Lastly, middle school teachers are fun colleagues. We are all just slightly crazy, but in a good way! 😀
I taught 6th grade (middle w) for 27 years. I loved it. The situations they get themselves into are always a great learning experience. I also love the fact that they get jokes, but still like their teachers… most of them. The parents are usually experiencing the same things at home and are more understanding of what we face.
Middle schoolers are at such a pivotal age. They’re discovering who they are and testing their limits. I thrive on helping them navigate that messy, exciting stage. Seeing their "lightbulb" moments and those small victories is what keeps me motivated.
Middle schoolers are “fresh”; they’ve graduated (on paper) from Little School to Big School! They are mercurial in nature, tart-sweet in attitude, and still malleable. They forgive me when I stumble, and I forgive them when they commit a faux pas. When they trust it’s a tangible thing; when they care it’s a genuine thing. Middle schoolers are VERY protective of the people they love INCLUDING their teachers! With Middles, there’s NEVER a dull moment, repetitive moments, but no dull moments. In many ways Middles are like bigger pre-k students: full of tantrums, emotions, curiosity, and need.💙💛
