I have experienced this during my job search and it’s very frustrating as it’s a definite free labour because either way if you get the job they will still train you their restaurant way and it will take you a couple of days or weeks to get to know their menu and point of sales systems. It’s just an unfair process for doing the “trial shift” and then not hire you for no reason yet you’ve done all the clearing and cleaning throughout the day for 8 hours.
Agree! Has anyone had a “trail shift” and found it to be a good place afterwards? I just find it insane to demand free work to prove you can do the job.

I have known a few people doing trial shifts but have either never made it or didn't want the job after doing it...
That's an entirely valid point. They'd be paying someone to do that shift anyway, so it's not like they're losing anything by paying someone who is on a working trial. I get that they might want to know if someone is capable, but they should be fair about compensating them.

Absolutely everyone deserves their hourly pay it's their worth and it's not really an added cost to the business...
That’s called a stage’ and of you aren’t trying for a very exclusive fine dining position don’t do one
Pro
Four hrs is entirely too long to work without pay. Two hrs max. Payment/wage must be agreed upon BEFORE the trial shift also….

Unpaid working trials are absolutely a preview of how staff will be treated. If they won’t respect labor during an interview, they won’t magically respect it later. Testing skills is fine. Extracting free labor isn’t.

Absolutely. If they won’t pay for your time during a trial, it’s a strong signal about how they value or don’t value their team. Real skills deserve real compensation.
