I’m not a doctor so not trying to opine on meds or anything like that here. But as an anxious mom, I’d give yourself more grace than you’re used to giving yourself. Pregnancy sucked for me. A lot of folks empathized but said that when they saw their baby, they had this magical moment full of love. Me. I was just concerned with next steps. People were not telling me next steps and so I just wanted to go home. Get in a routine, etc. I didn’t want to hurt my kids or anything like that! But I certainly wasn’t full of magic and wonder. Once they hit 2—they were everything to me. Just the absolute best. Fast forward, I now have two awesome kids in elementary school that everyone adores. And they constantly ask me how I raised such polite, kind kids. No idea. All I know is I’m rocking this phase. I wasn’t great at the <2 and that’s okay. Kids are a marathon. Not a sprint. That should put you at ease more than anything else. You don’t have to rock pregnancy or even those first few months (or years). And I think no one rocks the teen years :). You just need to keep showing up :). You got this.
Similar experience here - I delivered early and my daughter spent time in the NICU, the bonding just didn’t come naturally to me for a while. Now she’s my tiny bestie!
I have a 5-week old newborn currently sleeping on my chest. I adore him and I cannot believe how much I love him. I hope I’m as good as counsel 1 is later on! I was never maternal, even during pregnancy, and didn’t always want kids. I worried about things going wrong during pregnancy, so I did have some instincts (especially as my due date got closer and I couldn’t deny there was a little person in there) but I wasn’t all obsessed with my pregnancy or feeling ready to be a mom for a long time. Having a supportive partner has really helped. Sorry for this jumble of thoughts. Really just wanted to encourage that you’re not alone in your feelings. Wishing you a safe and healthy pregnancy!
Thank you! It honestly helps to know I’m not alone and that the instincts will kick in. Being a lawyer I’m going to read the books and take the classes 😂but I’m also aware that everyone’s experience is different and we have to do what’s best for us and our kid.
I’m an anxious person and never considered myself particularly “maternal” and I’m a great mom. You’re smart, and being smart will translate to parenting too. If it helps you to think about pregnancy/parenting more intellectually than emotionally, that’s ok - the emotional part of it will come with time. As far as doctors, visits during pregnancy are very different and most are pretty short. I was anxious during pregnancy and ended up as high-risk with a bunch of complications (not because of the anxiety, as you’ll learn they just happen sometimes) and despite everything I still ended up with a happy, healthy toddler who is just my favorite person ever. You’ve got this!
This! So this!
